In the books, James Bond wore a Rolex with large luminous numerals. Fleming was historically correct in this, as a few Royal Navy specialists had been issued with Rolex Submariner models A/6538 and 5512 at the end of the 1950s / early 1960s. During the filming of Dr. No, the film's director Terence Young lent Connery his own model 6538 Submariner, which appears in close up.
